LBritons from the Indian subcontinent are currently celebrating Divali, the festival of lights. But this fall, the lighting of candles and the throwing of firecrackers are intended as much to glorify the victory of good over evil as to celebrate the arrival at 10 Downing Street of the first non-white head of government in the history of the UK. Rishi Sunak, who was appointed on October 24 at the head of his party, and therefore of the country, by the conservative deputies – without the vote needing to be submitted to the militants –, is of Indian origin.
The former finance minister is also the second British Prime Minister not to be a Christian, after Benjamin Disraeli in the 19th century.e century. Of Jewish origin, the latter had however been baptized very young in the Anglican faith…
