Red Bull and Porsche, Audi and Sauber, would it be done?
While the arrival of Porsche and Audi in F1 is now more than a certainty after the declarations of the Volkswagen Group, the form remains to be known and no communication has come to clarify the situation. Also, several rumors emerge in the paddock.
There has been no official announcement yet on the arrival of Porsche and Audi in F1, but it is the worst kept secret in the paddock now. Last month, Herbert Diess, the CEO of Volkswagen’s management board, spoke to Reuters to say that the two manufacturers were going to engage in F1.
Audi with Sauber?
Porsche would arrive in F1 as an engine manufacturer, Audi would rather work on an involvement as a team. If Porsche would turn to Red Bull Racing, Audi is looking for a partner. But the two proposals made to McLaren for a takeover would have been rejected, which fueled another rumor, that of the takeover of the Swiss Sauber team. These claims came back at the Canadian Grand Prix by an unnamed rival team boss.
For Red Bull the team is strongly expected to be equipped with Porsche engines. « There should be an official announcement at Red Bull’s home race on July 10 at Spielberg »reported the Swiss journalist Roger Benoit in the newspaper Blick.
As for Audi’s involvement, there would be no doubt that Sauber would be the ideal candidate. « I don’t understand why Sauber and Audi are still hiding their collaboration »the team boss said on condition of anonymity. « Audi got 25% of the shares some time ago. And another 50% is coming. It’s a very big sum of money. » The German firm already has links with Sauber, notably using their wind tunnel in Hinwil.
Obviously, on the side of Alfa Romeo Racing (Sauber Motorsport), we are careful not to comment on this rumor. « For me, Williams is the favourite »said team boss Frédéric Vasseur. « They have very good relations with VW and Germany. »
