Rashford and Sancho not in expanded Southgate roster, big first for Toney

Gareth Southgate has communicated an expanded list of 28 players for England’s next gathering. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sanchon are out, while Brentford striker Ivan Toney is called up for the first time.

Gareth Southgate’s expanded roster to 28 for England’s next rally has left no room for Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, once again left at home. Rashford has not been called up since the Euros in the summer of 2021, while Sancho was entitled to a cape in October 2021.

« There were some players we wanted to keep involved, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end for those who aren’t there. Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown encouraging signs recently. He’s a player we know well so if he can play at a high level in the next few weeks he will of course be considered. »

Toney called for the first time

The surprise of the list is still in attack, where Ivan Toney is called for the first time. The Brentford striker is making an excellent start to the season, with already 5 goals and 2 assists in the Premier League.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, despite Manchester United’s difficult start to the season and their relegation to the bench, are called up. With Chilwell and Philipps, who also have little playing time, they are considered by Southgate as important elements for the group.

During the next international break, England will play Italy and Germany in the Nations League. Currently last in their group, dominated by Hungary, the Three Lions must save their place in the first division of the competition.
