Power, battery, chassis…Porsche reveals some technical information on the electric Macan whose development continues. The SUV is currently undergoing intensive testing around the world. Its commercialization is scheduled for 2024.
Initially announced for 2023, the marketing of the second-generation Porsche Macan has been postponed to 2024. The development of the SUV, which will be 100% electric, continues So and Porsche is letting us know by posting some images of prototypes in action. We see the vehicles being tested on roads as well as on circuits, on different terrains in various climates. The German manufacturer reveals some notable technical information at the same time.
Behavior inspired by the 911
The Macan II will be the first Porsche model to be based on the new PPE modular platform co-developed with Audi. Its main motor will be installed on the rear axle which it will drive. All-wheel-drive versions, with an additional electric motor on the front axle, will also be offered. On the most efficient variants, the rear motor will be installed even further back, behind the axle, to shift the center of gravity slightly to the rear by placing 52% of the mass on the rear wheels. This “Performance rear axle” will give the vehicle more dynamic behavior and improved traction when accelerating out of corners. Porsche thus adapts the rear overhang architecture that has been successful on the 911 for 60 years in the era of “zero emissions”, except that the SUV will retain a more neutral balance than the famous sports car. Because on an electric car, the heaviest element is not the engine but the battery.
The high-end Macans will also benefit from an electronically controlled rear differential, but also from four-wheel steering. Piloted suspension will be standard, and dual-valve shock absorbers will give distinct characters to the different driving modes. An air suspension will be offered for the most opulent variants. The Zuffenhausen manufacturer announces that the difference in width between the front and rear tires may be greater than on the current Macan. The diameter of the rims can reach 22 inches.
Power, torque, battery: the big numbers
The second Macan of the name will be launched with a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery benefiting from a voltage of 800 V and accepting a charging power greater than the 270 kW that the Taycan supports. When connected to a 400 V terminal, an internal device in the car divides the circuit into two blocks with a voltage of 400 V each, which can be recharged in parallel. In the best conditions, 25 minutes will be enough to go from 5 to 80% load according to Porsche.
On the power and torque side, the brand announces a maximum of around 612 hp and 1000 Nm » to begin with “, Enough to move the vehicle without difficulty, the weight of which should greatly exceed the two tonnes already reached by its predecessor. The power of the current Macan peaks at 440 hp, drawn from the V6 2.9 biturbo of the GTS version.
A new look for the electric Macan
Still heavily camouflaged, the prototypes shown by Porsche reveal nothing new. They confirm that the electric Macan will adopt a « fastback » profile and could thus be similar to a Cayenne Coupé in reduction. Like the latter, it will be equipped with a mobile spoiler integrated into its tailgate.
It will inaugurate two-stage front lights at Porsche. The front light units will accommodate the daytime running lights with a light signature with four small horizontal focal points like that of the Taycan. The projectors will be housed lower down in separate blocks. A light band can be guessed at the back. To find out more, we will have to wait a little longer.
