Poolers: The top-100 forwards in the NHL

POOLERS: The top-25 goalkeepers | The top-50 defenders

After flirting with a point-per-game harvest in his second season in the NHL in 2019-20 (61 points, including 24 goals, in 68 games), Svechnikov had an impressive playoffs, in which he won. unfortunately was slowed down by an injury. Expectations were very high for the 21-year-old Russian for the 2020-21 campaign. His harvest of 39 points (13 goals, 26 assists) in 52 games has left many on their appetites.

How to explain this slight drop in yield? First and foremost by enormous bad luck. Indeed, Svechnikov had only one point on 54.55 percent of the goals scored by his team 5-on-5 while on the ice. Among forwards who have spent at least 100 minutes on the ice 5-on-5 this season, Svechnikov is 14th and last among the Hurricanes, and 353rd out of 438 in the entire NHL. His main trio companion, Sebastian aho, yet sits at 73.53 percent in that regard, and Svechnikov had averaged over 63 percent in his first two NHL seasons.

Chief among the reasons for this decline is his shooting percentage, which is only 9.2 percent, compared to 11.1 percent for his entire career. However, he led on average the same number of shots per game (2.7) as in the previous season.

The prolonged absence of the excellent Teuvo Teravainen, with whom he mainly plays along with Aho on the first line, also partly explains Svechnikov’s setbacks. When Teravainen fell in battle for February 19, Svechnikov’s production fell to neutral for about twenty games. He had just 10 points, and just three goals, in 21 games, with an anemic 5.2 percent shooting percentage between February 20 and April 4.

Even so, Svechnikov had a rather unique season in 2020-21, thanks to his greater physical involvement. Indeed, he maintained an average of over two shots per game and two hits per game for the first time in his career. To give you an idea of the value to be placed on such a season, you should know that there have been only 30 occurrences, by 19 previous players, since the arrival of Svechnikov in the NHL in 2018-19 of a campaign of at least 0.5 points per game, with two throws and two shoulder strikes per game.

Among these 19 players, only Alex ovechkin, on three occasions, and his teammate Vincent Trocheck this season have done better than his average of 0.75 points per game.

So imagine how special Svechnikov’s production could be if he manages to ward off bad luck next season!

Here is the ranking of the 100 best forwards for poolers. This is a ranking based on current performance, but also on the player’s history, as well as their expected future performance.
