GMR Grand Prix, EL1: Palou ahead

Alex Palou finished top of the Free Practice 1 session this morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, dethroning young star Callum Ilott who was at the top of the timesheets until the last minutes when the Ganassi driver dislodged him .

Championship leader Palou’s fastest lap was 1’10″4555 at the wheel of the #10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, after the track reopened for a 90-second race, following a a red flag for Helio Castroneves’ #06 AutoNation/SiriusXM Honda, which stalled at the pit entrance.

Impressive rookie Ilott was second in 1’10″4593 in the #77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet. Three-time GMR Grand Prix winner Will Power was third in 1’10″5277 in the #12 Chevrolet of the Verizon Penske team. Graham Rahal was fourth in 1’10.6125 in the #15 Fifth Third Bank Honda, while Felix Rosenqvist rounded out the top five in 1’10.7108 in the #7 Chevrolet Vuse Arrow McLaren SP.

Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon started his session with a bit of anxiety when smoke billowed from his #9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda in the pits. But the Ganassi team discovered that the smoke was only created by a burning resin or coating in the engine exhaust pipes, and Dixon continued the session without incident.
