Ottawa Senators’ Jakob Chychrun out for a few weeks with lower-body injury

Ottawa Senators head coach DJ Smith announced Saturday morning that defenseman Jakob Chychrun is out for a few weeks with a lower-body injury.

Coach Smith told reporters on Friday that Jakob Chychrun was doubtful for Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils and that the defenseman « kinda shot something there, we’ll see how he reacts to the treatment here. » Chychrun left Thursday night’s 7-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning with a lower-body injury. During the second period, Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman deflected Chychrun, then in the third period, he and Lightning forward Michael Eyssimont hit the boards. He was able to get up but headed for the bench favoring his left leg before going down the tunnel to the locker room. Chychrun recorded one assist, one shot, three hits and five blocks in 18:07 of ice time this game.

The 24-year-old has two goals and three assists for five points in 12 games since being acquired from the Arizona Coyotes in a March 1 trade. He has nine goals and 33 points this season, split between the Coyotes and Senators.

Additionally, the Senators also announced that 20-year-old rookie Ridly Greig’s season was over as he suffered a sternum injury. He last played in Thursday’s 7-2 win over the Bolts, recording 12:21 of ice time. This season, he has one goal and six points in 16 games. He has five points in his last 10 games. Greig was a first-round selection (28th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft and has spent his entire career in major junior with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. Greig also spent time in the AHL with the Belleville Senators, tallying 13 goals and 27 points in 35 games this season.
