OM eliminated from the Europa League after their heavy defeat at Galatasaray

The match: 4-2

Those who wondered what would be the face of OM in the hot context of the Ali-Sami Yen stadium, four days after his match postponed after five minutes against OL on Sunday, for a bottle throw on Dimitri Payet, n ‘ were quick to get the answer. Very feverish and lax defensively, the Marseillais were quickly stunned by Galatasaray, and could not return in a hostile environment (numerous projectile throws), despite a double from Arkadiusz Milik (2-4). This defeat – the third of the season in all competitions – marks the elimination of the Marseillais from the Europa League, even if they can still hope to be transferred to the Europa League Conference (C4).

If Bamba Dieng was stirring in the first minutes, OM quickly cracked, when Boubacar Kamara’s ball loss 30 meters from his goal led to the opening of the score of the Romanian Alexandru Cicaldau, taking advantage of an intervention average of Pau Lopez (12th). A minute earlier, Mbaye Diagne had already found the bar of OM’s Spanish goalkeeper.

Not demobilized, despite the pressure from the stadium, the Marseillais almost returned quickly, but the cross strike from Luan Peres hit the right post of Fernando Muslera (19th). They even touched wood a second time before the break, with a shot on the bar from Dieng, after a one-two with Guendouzi (42nd). The Senegalese had already worried Muslera just before (37th).

Problem, Galatasaray had made the break in the meantime, exploiting once again the lack of organization of the Olympian defense: Duje Caleta Car scored against his camp, on a ball slipped by Cicaldau (30th). Despite a slight start from Marseille at the start of the second half, the excellent Feghouli (see below) ended the suspense (3-0, 64th). The penalty obtained by Dieng and transformed into two stages by Arkadiusz Milik (68th), then the Pole’s double at the end of the game (85th), did not change anything. After a first big opportunity from Diagne (70th), Galatasaray had already scored a fourth goal by Ryan Babel … on his first ball (83rd). With a new huge lack of attention from the defense.

Marseille is the first French club to concede four goals against a Turkish club in the European Cup from Bordeaux against … Galasataray, in February 2009.

The player: Sofiane Feghouli enjoyed the spaces left by OM

While he had not played during the match at the Vélodrome on September 30 (0-0), the former Grenoblois Sofiane Feghouli was this time holder, and was quick to show up. The Algerian international feasted on the spaces left behind the Marseille defense. While Mbaye Diagne first found the bar on one of his centers (11th), he did not wait too long to be a decisive passer for good.

A minute later, following a delicious hook on Caleta-Car at the entrance to the area, he launched the Romanian Cicaldau on the opening scoring (12th). Feghouli often took advantage of Luan Peres’ delay to escape on the right side, and OM never really managed to control him. Peres was also warned by stopping him a little too manly (53rd). Feghouli was finally rewarded for his efforts by taking over a center from Kerem Aktürkoglu, in a Marseille defense still outdated (64th).

The fact: Lazio’s victory marks the elimination of OM

After four draws in the first four days of the Europa League, OM’s defeat on Thursday marked their elimination from the competition. Indeed, at the same time, Lazio Rome won on Lokomotiv Moscow (3-0), with a double penalty from Ciro Immobile (56th, 63rd) and a goal from Pedro (87th).

Marseille, relegated to four points from Lazio and seven points from Galatasaray, can no longer grab the first two places on the final day. On the other hand, the Marseillais, third in group E, will only need a draw at the reception of Lokomotiv Moscow, on December 9, to see the round of 16 of the Europa League Conference (C4).
