Currently 4th in Ligue 1 before their late match against Lorient, OL are in 6th place in the French rankings comparing the prices spent to build the current squad. With only €127m spent, the club is clearly betting on training.

There are the speeches and there are the numbers that prove these words. After their chaotic year, OL tried to clean up their squad but above all chose to focus on training to return to this OL DNA. Alexander’s Returns Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso have gone in this direction, as well as the various contract extensions for six months (Lukeba, tasteCaqueret, Cherki, lopes). Saturday, vs. Angers, six Lyon holders were from the Academy. A pride for the supporters but also the proof of Lyon’s know-how which allows the club not to spend fortunes on the transfer market. This summer, theOL released less than ten million euros on the table to bring Nicolas TagliaficoJohann Lepenant and Sael Kumbedi.

Signing bonuses are not taken into account

Train and recruit smart, that’s the credo within theOL for a few years. This sporting and economic strategy can be found in the ranking published by the CIES on Monday. The Football Observatory has evaluated each club according to the amounts spent to train the workforce for the 2022-2023 season and the Lyon club comes in 6th position. With « only » €127m (including bonuses) spent, OL ranks behind clubs like Rennes (€220m) or OGC Nice (€147m). However, this ranking does not take into account the signing bonuses paid to free players like Boateng or this summer with Lacazette and Tolisso. With a workforce bought for 847 million euros, the PSG obviously in the lead.
