Nienaber rotated his 42 Springboks against the Welsh

Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber does not regret having made 14 changes to his team to play Saturday’s test match in Bloemfontein concluded by a historic victory for the XV of Wales on South African soil (13-12) .

It was the first-ever Welsh victory against the Boks in South Africa, after 11 defeats spread over 58 years, including the total rout of 1998 (96-13). The two selections are therefore tied 1-1 before the 3rd and last test match of the series, scheduled for next Saturday in Cape Town. « It will be a final. The whole team feels like they let down our phenomenal audience tonightNienaber said after the match, played in front of 46,000 spectators.

The Bloemfontein meeting was part of the program planned to prepare for the next World Cup in France (September 8 – October 28, 2023), to give playing time to all 42 players gathered for this series against the Welsh. A series started with a 32-29 victory in Pretoria, with other players.

Nienaber drew a parallel with the defeats of New Zealand against Ireland, and Australia against England, when the two teams from the southern hemisphere had also started their series with a victory, such as the Springboks .

« We could have chosen to be conservative, to win the series right away, but here we have answers on the 42 players and that was precisely our objective.Nienaber added.

The substitute Springboks, including six novices, still led 12-3 midway through the second half. Only the second line of RC Toulon, Eben Etzebeth, started for both matches. The Welsh won thanks to a try, the only one of the match, at the very end of the match.
