Nick Suzuki is named captain of the Canadiens

Nick Suzuki is the new captain of the Montreal Canadiens, coach Martin St-Louis announced at the team’s annual golf tournament on Monday.

The 23-year-old forward thus becomes the 31st captain in the illustrious history of the Habs. Suzuki also becomes the youngest player to win the title with the Canadiens. Saku Koivu had inherited the « C » at the age of 24 in 1999.

Suzuki then introduced the captain’s assistants himself: Brendan Gallagher and Joel Edmundson.

The CH did not have a captain in 2021-22, since Shea Weber, who had been in the role since 2018, did not play all season due to foot and ankle injuries which may have put an end to his career. Weber was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights on June 16 for Evgenii Dadonov.

« I want a leadership role on this team, » Suzuki said April 30 during his season-ending media briefing. “I’ve been doing this job since I joined the team. There are a lot of good candidates in the squad, older guys who have been through a lot. I don’t control any of that except how I play. It will be the decision of the general staff. »

Suzuki was acquired from the Golden Knights on September 10, 2018 by the Canadiens along with Tomas Tatar and a second-round pick in 2019 for the then Habs captain, Max Pacioretty. In 209 regular season games with Montreal, he had 143 points (49 points, 94 assists), and added 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 32 playoff games.

Last season, Suzuki finished first in team scoring with 61 points (21 goals, 40 assists). He had 34 points in 37 games after the arrival of Martin St-Louis, one less than his teammate Cole Caufield during the same period.

« He’s a real pro the way he behaves even though he’s young, » Caufield said on April 30. He’s someone I watch on a daily basis. He’s quiet in the locker room, but he’s doing the right things on the ice. Even though he is young, I know he is a role model for many. »

Suzuki agreed to an eight-year contract extension worth $63 million (annual average of $7.875 million) on October 12, 2021. This agreement is effective this season.
