Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison explained that he was driving his vehicle 140 mph (224 km/h) last week due to a « canine emergency at home », according to what ESPN has learned.
Addison’s statement follows charges of speeding and dangerous driving filed against him by Minnesota state police.
A description released Monday said Addison « declared that his dog urgently requires his presence at his residence and that is the reason for his speed. »
A police officer intercepted Addison driving at high speed eastbound on Interstate-94 shortly after 3 a.m. The speed limit here is 88 km/h (55 mph).
Driving a Lamborghini Urus, Addison would have slowed down when he saw the flashing lights of another patrolman stopped on the shoulder.
The 21-year-old Addison was the 23rd overall pick in the most recent NFL Draft.
He issued a statement the day after his arrest, saying he « made a mistake and showed poor judgment ». He also promised “not to repeat this kind of behavior again”.
