Former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has decided to sue the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell.
The 58-year-old believes he was forced to resign last October after emails containing racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments surfaced. The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Nevada County.
The 21-page complaint, a copy of which was obtained on Las Vegas Journal reports that Gruden was forced to resign after a « malicious and orchestrated campaign by Commissioner Roger Goodell to destroy the career and reputation of former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden ».
Gruden also claims that the League made mention of other documents that could be revealed in order to put pressure on him to make this decision.
« When their first salvo did not qualify for Gruden’s dismissal or his resignation, the defendants increased the pressure by insinuating that other documents would become public if Gruden was not fired », one can read in the pursuit.
“They followed up with this threat by revealing another set of documents to the New York Times for an October 11, 2021 article. On October 7, Jon Gruden was head coach of the Raiders with a 10-year, $ 100 million contract. . As of October 11, he was forced to resign, ”he added.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy denied the allegations.
« These allegations are totally false and the NFL will challenge them relentlessly, » said McCarth
On the evening of Monday, October 11, Gruden announced that he was stepping down as head coach of the Raiders. He joined the team in 2018.
