(New York) The NFL hired Maia Chaka, the first black referee in its history. She will be supervising games starting in the 2021 season.

Chaka will begin his career in the NFL after having refereed in the Pac-12 and the Conference USA. She was also selected to participate in the NFL Referee Development Program in 2014.
“Maia’s hard work, dedication and persistence – especially within the NFL Referee Development Program – enabled her to become an NFL referee,” said Troy Vincent, who oversees league operations. Maia is pioneering becoming the first African American woman to be an NFL referee, and she will help normalize the presence of women on the soccer field. »
Chaka graduated in Education from Norfolk State University. She is also a health and physical education teacher in the Virginia Beach Public School System.
The NFL has not specified what position it will occupy among the referees on the field.
