INDIANAPOLIS – Carson Wentz threw three touchdowns, Jonathan Taylor had 172 rushing yards and two majors and the Indianapolis Colts beat the New York Jets 45-30 on Thursday night.
The Colts (4-5) finished the game with 260 rushing yards, which is the highest total by an NFL team this season.
Jets starting quarterback Mike White injured his right forearm in the first quarter, four days after throwing three touchdown passes and for 405 yards on his first start in the NFL.
White watched the final three quarters on the sidelines, after throwing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Moore to tie it 7-7.
The rest of the game was Colts history and the Jets (2-6) suffered a seventh consecutive loss in a game played in the evening.
Taylor broke the tie with a strong 21-yard run. When Jets running back Ty Johnson lost a fumble in midfield, Wentz ended the Colts’ attacking streak with a one-yard touchdown pass to Jack Doyle to take the score to 21-7.
The Jets responded with a field goal late in the first half, but Wentz extended his lead by joining Michael Pittman in the end zone for an 11-yard major.
The Colts did not apply the brakes at the start of the second half. Wentz threw a two-yard touchdown pass to offensive lineman Danny Pinter, late alone in the end zone. Taylor delivered the final blow with a 78-yard touchdown rush, putting his squad ahead 42-10.
White’s replacement Josh Johnson threw three touchdown passes and had 317 yards on the air. These are two personal summits.
Wentz completed 22 of his 30 passes for gains of 272 yards. Nyheim Hines carried the ball six times for gains of 74 yards and a touchdown, and he received four receptions for a total of 34 yards.
Johnson succeeded 27 of his 41 attempts by air. He was the victim of an interception which sealed the outcome of the confrontation.
