NFL: already six wins this season for the surprising Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. — Before the season, the bookmakers put the most-under of the Seahawks’ win total at five and a half. And many observers believed that the prudent choice was to go for the “less”.

Midway through the season, the optimists have already been proven right, with the Seattle club posting a 6-3 record, coming off four straight wins.

« I don’t know if we’re going to stay underdog, but we’re fine with it so far, » quarterback Geno Smith said.

Victorious 31-21 Sunday in Arizona, the Seahawks have a lead of a game and a half at the top of their section.

Starting quarterback, Geno Smith had not had this status since 2014.

He had an interception against the Cards, but he got up by leading three scoring drives of 70 yards or more.

Smith completed 73.1 percent of his passes, an NFL high.

He had 15 touchdown passes, ranking fourth in the league.

Rookies are excelling in key positions and the defense has been one of the best units on the league lately.

« We’ve been playing some really good football for the past few weeks, » head coach Pete Carroll said. It’s really nice to see where we are. »

Offensive linemen Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas stood out in their NFL debut.

With 570 rushing yards, Kenneth Walker is a contender for offensive rookie of the year.

Another rookie, cornerback Tariq Woolen, is already leading rivals to target passes elsewhere.

Cornerback Coby Bryant and defensive end Boye Mafe are also solid players in their first year in the NFL.

Hired as a free agent, linebacker Uchenna Nwosu set a career-high seven sacks in his fifth season. He’s been a bargain so far, given his two-year, $19 million pact.

« We gave him free rein to trust his instincts and be a go-getter, » Carroll said.

Seattle will play again on Sunday in Munich, Germany, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5).
