New Jersey Devils sign Josh Filmon to three-year entry-level contract
New Jersey Devils executive vice president and general manager Tom Fitzgerald announced the club has signed prospect Josh Filmon to a three-year entry-level contract beginning in 2023-24. Filmon also signed an amateur tryout deal with American Hockey League Devils affiliate Utica Comets. He will report to Utica today.
Filmon was selected in the sixth round (No. 166) in the 2022 NHL Draft. In his draft year, while playing for the Western Hockey League’s Swift Current Broncos, Filmon had 45 points in 67 games. He returned to Swift Current for this third season and was named alternate captain. In the 2022-23 season, he scored a team-leading 47 goals and 75 points in 64 games. In a December 16 game against the Edmonton Oil Kings, Filmon recorded a six-goal game, becoming the seventh player in WHL history to record such a feat. Filmon played on a well-rounded Broncos team that included Pittsburgh Penguins first-round pick Owen Pickering, Anaheim Ducks prospect Connor Hvidston, and Florida Panthers prospect Josh Davies.
Filmon was drafted by the Broncos 67th overall in the 2019 WHL bantam draft. The 6-foot-3 forward has registered 72 goals and 50 assists for 122 points in 148 games since the 2020-21 season. Filmon also represented Team Canada internationally in 2021-22 at the World Junior Under-18 Challenge. He registered one assist and two penalty minutes in three games. He will join the Comets, who currently sit second in the AHL North Division with a 31-24-6-3 record with 71 points. Filmon has the potential to get AHL playoff games this season to help his professional development.
