NBA: The Raptors surprised by the Pistons, broken nose for Khem Birch

DETROIT – Trey Lyles scored 21 points and the Detroit Pistons continued their success by beating the Toronto Raptors 103-87 on Friday night.

Cade Cunningham and Hamidou Diallo added 18 points each for the Pistons, who are 5-3 in 2022 after finishing 2021 with 18 losses in their last 19 games.

Josh Jackson had 13 points as a backup for the Pistons, who held the Raptors to just 32.2 percent shooting success.

While three starters from the Detroit squad spent most of the evening with several personal fouls, Lyles and Jackson came off the bench and played a big part in the victory for his team.

Montreal’s Khem Birch fractured his nose in the loss. He will have to return to Toronto for surgery.

Fred VanVleet had 24 points and 10 assists for the Raptors, but he made just six of 21 shots from the field. Pascal Siakam had 23 points and 11 rebounds. The Torontonians suffered a second loss in a row.

The Pistons led 56-43 at the half, which was their biggest lead of the season. They held a 22-7 halftime advantage in points scored by substitute players, including 15 by Lyles.

The Detroit team increased its lead to 18 points, but many of its key players suffered several personal fouls. The Raptors came close to 69-60, but struggled offensively and trailed 83-66 late in the third quarter.
