Nascar: « I don’t have to win » – Marc-Antoine Camirand

BOWMANVILLE | Holding a comfortable 23-point lead at the top of the overall standings, Marc-Antoine Camirand is well positioned to claim a first title in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series.

But the driver from Saint-Léonard-d’Aston does not intend to limit himself to a role of figuration on the occasion of the 12e and the penultimate stage of the season, which will be presented on Sunday on the winding road course of Mosport, in Ontario.

« Yes, it’s a big difference, but I don’t take anything for granted, » Camirand said in an interview with the Log.

« I don’t have to win, » he continued. But no question of finishing far behind either. I have to manage my race intelligently to accumulate the maximum number of points.”

“A result similar to Mirabel [où il a terminé deuxième] would be very satisfying. I think the championship will be played at Mosport at the end of the week.

Lacroix on a mission

Even if other drivers, including Andrew Ranger and Louis-Philippe Dumoulin, have a mathematical chance of winning the championship in 2022, there are rather four of them who aspire to top honors.

Ontarian DJ Kennington as well as Quebecers Alexandre Tagliani and Kevin Lacroix are the most serious pursuers on the board. Obviously, it is the driver from Saint-Eustache who represents the greatest threat to Camirand.

Lacroix is indeed on a mission at Mosport, he who dominated the event contested last week at Mirabel.

“I have no choice but to win and I’m very confident. If the mechanics hold up, my chances are good”, declared Lacroix, whose speech is obviously very different from that of the leader in the cumulative classification.

Lacroix has made the Mosport track, where he began his career in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series seven years ago, a fertile ground since he reached the top step of the podium on six occasions.

« I know the place well and have always felt comfortable there, » he added. I was very competitive on the road circuits this year as also demonstrated by my victories in Toronto and Mirabel.

Tagliani still believes in it

If Lacroix won the race presented at Mosport last May, it was Camirand who won a year ago on this same track. And each time, Alexandre Tagliani accompanied them on the second step of the podium.

The veteran driver from Lachenaie has certainly not thrown in the towel.

« I still believe in it and I’m going to do my best to fill the gap, even if it means taking risks if necessary, » said Tagliani.
