Future Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann assured on Tuesday that he would not plunder his current club, RB Leipzig, once in Bavaria.
He will not come quite alone, since the transfer of French defender Dayot Upamecano has already been announced, but he intends to leave his future ex-training alone. Julian Nagelsmann, formalized on Tuesday as coach of Bayern Munich from next season, assured at a press conference that he would not strip RB Leipzig of its best elements.
« Now that RB Leipzig have given me the chance (to join Bayern), I’m not going to start taking players there, the 33-year-old technician promised. I’m not going to hire a T6 (a utility, editor’s note) to go to Munich and take one or two good Leipzig players with me. «
A « lifelong dream »
At Bayern, Nagelsmann will succeed Hansi Flick, author of a historic sextuplet last season but who, in conflict over recruitment policy with his sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, asked to leave at the end of the season.
Under contract with the Saxons until 2023, Nagelsmann assures that he had not planned to leave so soon. But he explained that the events precipitated following the internal conflict at the « Rekordmeister ». « I had requests from other clubs that I refused, » he said, recalling that his « lifelong dream » was to coach Bayern.
The Bavarians’ first rival this season, Leipzig has agreed to let go of his young coach against « a very high transfer fee request », according to club boss Oliver Mintzlaff. Several German media have estimated this sum between 20 and 30 million euros, bonus included, which would make him the most expensive coach in football history. Although he did not officially confirm these amounts, Mintzlaff nevertheless hinted that they were correct: « We are not denying the rumors that are circulating. »
Nagelsmann also clarified that he would join Bayern with his assistants Benjamin Glück and Timmo Hardung, with whom he has worked since his period at Hoffenheim (2016-2019).
