It has already been more than two months since the volunteers of the Calmont Sport and mechanics and the five other associations that have come as reinforcements are working hard to prepare the ground. Clearing the low sides, raking, cutting branches that are too long and cleaning the village road.

Because these Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September 2022the town of Calmont will host the French drift championship and its mythical “Touge” test (winding mountain road, in Japanese).

“In reality, we started to work on it in January by launching all the requests for municipal, departmental and prefectural authorization. But we have only really been in the preparations since June, ”specifies Laurent Ferrethe president of Calmont Sport and Mechanics.

Safety, a major point of the organization

A few days before the event, the volunteers are still in the field: it is now necessary set up all the security measuresbarriers, rubalise, diversions…

And although the organizers are familiar with this exercise – it is the fifth edition of the French drift championship that Calmont welcomes – this step remains crucial for the smooth running of the event.

The route is very secure for the public. We have areas dedicated to them, overhanging the road, and others that are forbidden to them. These areas where the public is excluded have been defined in order to avoid the installation of barriers and, among other things, the breakage of cars.

Modified circulation in the village

From Friday morning, 9 a.m., and until Sunday evening, 11 p.m., a diversion will be set up in the village. Avenue de Nailloux and rue Neuve-des-Tourelles will be closed to traffic. Vehicles will therefore have to take rue André-Méric, then avenue de Gibel and chemin de Lasserre. The City also indicates that it will always be possible to park in the heart of the village. A parking lot for spectators will be provided outside, on the hillsides. For pedestrians, a path will provide access from the spectator areas to the village.

Appreciated features

These precautions do not prevent spectators from enjoying the race because here, the proximity to the cars remains. This is also one of the particularities of this Touge event:

This is the only event of the French championship which is organized on a road. Everything else is done on the circuit. This characteristic, quite atypical, allows a real proximity between the spectators and the cars.

For this fifth edition in Lauragaisthe organizers expect no less than 3,000 people. “We welcome more and more people every year, including some who cross France. It’s an event that appeals enormously, both to the public and to the drivers,” says the president of Calmont Mechanical Sport.
