Motorola signs first Major League Baseball (MLB) jersey sponsorship deal with San Diego Padres
This Tuesday, the Sand Diego Padres franchise formalized the signing of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) first jersey sponsorship deal.
Under the new collective agreement signed a few weeks ago, teams are allowed to enter into contracts to display sponsors on players’ outfits. The Padres wasted no time in formalizing a contract with Motorola, which will display its logo on the right sleeve of jerseys starting in the 2023 season.
To accompany the formalization, the smartphone manufacturer shot a video with Manny Machado and Blake Snell displaying the brand’s « batwing » logo and the « hellomoto » sound signature.
In addition to the visibility space on the jersey from 2023, Motorola also becomes the presenting partner of the Hall of Fame of the team and official smartphone partner from now on.
On social media, many MLB watchers criticized the new sponsorship deal.
In 2020, baseball fans had already resolved to see the Nike logo appear on the front of the shirts worn by playersas part of a new equipment supplier contract.

2020
Far from being in the tradition of US sports, sponsorship on jerseys has been introduced in recent years in the NBA and will be authorized on those of the NHL from next season. Since 2021, hockey franchises can also display a sponsor on the helmet of players during games.
For this 2021-2022 NBA season, Motorola is the jersey partner of two franchises, the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers.
