Rolex 24: Update on the edition

The 2023 season will mark the great start of a new era for IMSA. Indeed, the LMDh regulations are arriving across the Atlantic in the North American endurance championship. This is called GTP in IMSA, and the Roar will kick off.

The Roar Before the Rolex 24 is a major three-day general rehearsal, during which we discover the starting grid of the most famous endurance race in America. The qualifying race seen in recent years is disappearing in favor of a traditional session to determine the order of the grid.

In the GTP category, the stakes will be colossal with the presence of three Cadillacs, whose liveries were presented this Thursday (photo). The Chip Ganassi Racing and Action Express teams will operate them.

There will also be two official Porsche 963s, operated by Penske, as in the WEC. The numbers 5 and 6 of the WEC are partly abandoned for the 6 and the 7. It should also be noted that two manufacturers absent in the WEC for the 2023 season will be present in IMSA from the 24 Hours of Daytona.

This is BMW, of which two examples of the M Hybrid V8 prototype will be entered by the Rahal Letterman Lanigan team. The German manufacturer must join the WEC from 2024, at the same time as Lamborghini and Alpine.

On the other hand, we do not yet know if Acura will come to the world championship. On the other hand, two ARX-06 prototypes will be entered by Wayne Taylor Racing and Meyer Shank Racing. Meyer Shank’s crew, which includes Simon Pagenaud, is the defending champion.

Kevin Magnussen finally forfeited at Daytona?

There will also be an LMP2 category, an LMP3 category, and two GT categories, namely GTD Pro and GTD. It is in the latter that Doriane Pin will race in particular, at the wheel of the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 of the Iron Dames team, which she shares with Sarah Bovy, Rahel Frey and Michelle Gatting.

Kevin Magnussen should also have been riding, to continue endurance racing with his father Jan, like at the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi in December. Unfortunately, a minor hand operation will almost certainly cause him to miss the Roar, and possibly the Rolex 24.

“Due to a harmless but unexpected hand operation next week, it is uncertain if I will be able to race at Daytona with MDK Motorsport” wrote the Haas F1 driver on his social media.

the Roar Before the Rolex 24 will take place from Friday 20 January to Sunday 22 January. A week later will be the Rolex 24them Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 January.
