The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) defended, on Saturday, his decision to choose Morocco to host many football events this year. “Several countries wish to compete for the organization of CAF events, but you cannot do it without the support of the government”, explained Patrice Motsepe, speaking during a Forum organized in Johannesburg.
Morocco was the host country of the CAF Champions League final this year. A decision that sparked an outcry, raised in particular by the giants of the Egyptian club Al Ahly. The kingdom will also host the Women’s African Cup of Nations and the CAF Awards next month, recalls the South African newspaper Sunday Times.
“You cannot be president of the organization and not comply with the rules and regulations. So I respect the law. Decisions have been made”, explained the CAF president about the complaints of the Egyptian club which lost the final against Wydad Casablanca. Patrice Motsepe assured that “no country, club or nation will benefit from a privileged status” as long as he is president of CAF. « I can fully understand the dissatisfaction of the president of Al Ahly and we will make sure to treat everyone the same, » he said.
“Again, the problem (that Morocco hosts the final, editor’s note) is not what the facts are. It is a problem of perception”, explained the president of CAF, assuring that “Morocco, more than any other country in Africa, allocates and gives money for the development of football on the continent”.
