MLS: Racist attack on three Vancouver Whitecaps academy players
The Vancouver Whitecaps said in a statement Sunday that three players from its development academy were assaulted during an outdoor rally on Saturday.
The team argues that this incident was motivated by racism. The names of the three players involved were not disclosed.
The Whitecaps have revealed that one of the players has been rushed to hospital and will need surgery due to injuries that are not life threatening, however.
He should “make a full recovery”.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Burnaby are investigating the event, and a suspect has been arrested, report the Whitecaps.
» Enough is enough. We are heartbroken and in disgust at what has happened. We condemn all forms of discrimination, racism and hatred, ”read the press release.
“Such disgusting behavior has no place in our community. We will do all we can to support the players who have been victimized and want the perpetrator to be punished as severely as possible. «
