MLS: Huge DC United take

DC United have acquired Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) club made the announcement on Friday, the day after the transfer deadline in the circuit.

The Belgian joins Washington’s roster as a Designated Player and has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. He will therefore be associated with DC United until the conclusion of the 2024 campaign. The team also has an option for the following season.

« Christian is an elite player who has played at the highest level for a long time, » head coach Wayne Rooney said in a statement from his organization. Benteke has spent the last 10 seasons in the Premier League, England. He notably wore the colors of Aston Villa and Liverpool. In this circuit, he hit the target 86 times and provided 23 assists in 280 games.

DC United will welcome the newcomer with open arms as the team faces a difficult season in 2022. So far, Rooney’s squad have gone 6-3-13 and sit last in the league. Eastern Association.

LAFC is improving

Los Angeles FC have also added a Designated Player to their ranks, securing AS Saint-Étienne striker Denis Bouanga.

The Gabonese scored 26 times in 96 games with the French club in the first division. Saint-Étienne was however relegated to Ligue 2 for the 2022-2023 campaign.

« Denis is a striker at the peak of his career and is a great addition to our squad, » LAFC general manager John Thorrington said in a statement. He’s a highly sought-after player, and we’re grateful to him and his family for choosing to pursue his career in Los Angeles. »

Bouanga is the Californian organization’s third designated player, after Carlos Vela and Brian Rodriguez.

The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired defender Carlos Akapo, an Equatoguinean who most recently played for Cadiz CF in Spain.

Charlotte FC have secured midfielder Nuno Santos from Benfica, Portugal. He will hold one of the international player positions with the North Carolina team.

Real Salt Lake has obtained defender Bryan Oviedo, who has just won the Danish championship with FC Copenhagen. The 32-year-old Costa Rican also played in the English Premier League with Everton and Sunderland.
