MLS: Daniel Rios’ header makes all the difference for Charlotte

Daniel Rios scored in the fifth minute and Charlotte beat New York City FC 1-0 on Saturday.

Rios found the back of the net with a header following a throw-in. He managed to push the ball to the right of the keeper, who was unable to save the shot.

Kristijan Kahlina offered a shutout thanks to a stoppage for Charlotte (11-17-2).

The teams play again next Saturday, with Charlotte visiting the Chicago Fire while NYCFC (13-11-7) hosts the New York Red Bulls.

Charlotte’s win keeps CF Montreal seven points behind New York City FC, which sits fourth in the East with 46 points.

The Red Bulls sow some joy among their supporters

Cristian Casseres Jr. and Lewis Morgan scored within 20 minutes of the second half and the New York Red Bulls defeated the New England Revolution 2-1.

Morgan’s winning goal from the penalty spot came in the 78th minute. He also continued his streak of consecutive games with a goal or an assist since April. The chance came after a foul in the penalty area was given to New England’s Tommy McNamara.

The Red Bulls (14-9-8, 50 points) have won just the fifth time in 16 home games this season. Following this victory, the New York team is only three points behind CF Montreal in the standings.

McNamara scored the lone goal for the Revolution (9-10-11, 38 points), which remains outside the playoff picture in the East.

New England keeper Dorde Petrovic made three saves. Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel didn’t register a save.

Casseres scored his second goal of the season in the 58th minute as the Red Bulls put the pressure on after falling behind. Elias Mancel got an assist.

Casseres’ second goal of the season came about four and a half months after his first goal. He had had a total of four assists in the last four games.

McNamara scored in the 53rd minute on the Revolution’s second shot on goal. The shot came near the center of the penalty area on a pass from Gustavo Bou.

It was McNamara’s fourth goal this season and the first time he’s scored in consecutive games. Three of his goals have come in away games.

New England had suffered shutouts in four of their previous nine games.
