MLB: Tension mounts in Blue Jays loss to Yankees

NEW YORK — Andrew Benintendi hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to break the tie as the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 on Sunday.

The Yankees avoided a four-game sweep against the Torontonians. The New York club leads the Blue Jays by eight games at the top of the American East Division.

In round five, Alek Manoah hit Aaron Judge in the left elbow. The Major League homers leader glanced in Manoah’s direction as Yankees ace Gerrit Cole yelled from the dugout.

« When your guy is hit, it usually gets your attention, » Boone said, much calmer. I don’t think it was intentional, but it got everyone focused and we moved on. »

« I think if Gerrit wants to do something, he can walk past the Audi sign next time, » Manoah said, referring to the luxury car brand’s logo drawn on the lawn near the shelter. visiting team at Yankee Stadium.

When asked if it was specifically about Manoah and if he believed he intended to hit Judge intentionally, Cole remained vague in his post-match comments.

« Not necessarily, » Cole said noncommittally.

Judge, who has just one hit in 16 at-bats – including six strikeouts – against Manoah, also believed it was unintentional.

« It was in the heat of the moment, » admitted Judge. Nobody likes to be hit. »

Cole was held back by bench instructor Carlos Mendoza before reaching the officials. During that streak, Judge and Manoah, who were teammates at last month’s All-Star Game, appeared to discuss the pitch diplomatically.

On a day in which Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was booed as the team retired Paul O’Neill’s number 21 jersey, the New York squad signed just a 10th win in their last 30 games since the All-Star Game break.

» There is no secret. Everyone knows what we’re going through right now. It was a blow in an important game,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

O’Neil became the 23rd player in the Yankees organization to have his jersey retired. The last was Derek Jeter’s No.2, in 2017.

The former Yankees outfielder nicknamed “The Warrior” helped the team win four World Series during his time in the Big Apple.

After the Manoah-Judge-Cole incident, the Yankees responded quickly after Wandy Peralta walked Jackie Bradley Jr. to force a Blue Jays player to home plate and tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. .

Jose Trevino beat a throw from third baseman Matt Chapman for an infield hit and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Benintendi first hit a long foul ball before catapulting a slippery ball from Adam Cimber (9-5) to the second balcony from the right.

Benintendi, who also hit a double, hit his fourth homer of the campaign. It was his first four-goal hit since June 20, more than a month after the Kansas City Royals traded him to the Yankees.

« It was a great moment, » Judge said.

Anthony Rizzo scored on an error by Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the first inning. DJ LeMahieu gave New Yorkers the lead with a single in the fourth.

Whit Merrifield hit a slightly odd home run for the Blue Jays in the fourth inning, as the ball bounced off the top of the fence twice before crossing to the other side. The Toronto team had won its last four games.

Lou Trivino (2-7) has had the last seven outs for the Yankees.

Yankees starter Nestor Cortes allowed just one run and three hits in six innings at the mound. He passed five opponents in the mitt.

Manoah allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in six innings of work for the visitors.

Springer still absent

Blue Jays outfielder George Springer was out for a third straight game since hitting a foul ball to his right knee on Thursday.

Springer has only played four games since being taken off the injured list Aug. 15 after elbow discomfort.

The 32-year-old has a .267 batting average and has hit 18 homers in addition to driving in 51 runs and crossing the plate 64 times. He also stole 10 bases in 93 games this season. Springer was named to the All-Star Game for the fourth time in his career this season, although he opted out to heal some injuries.

Jackie Bradley Jr. took his place in center field.
