MLB: Summary of September 4 games in the National

Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to come within one of Alex Rodriguez’s 696 mark for 4th most homers in major league baseball on Sunday in a win of 2-0 of the St Louis Cardinals against the Chicago Cubs.

His long ball good for two points came to make the difference in a game where starter Miles Mikolas was intractable. The Cardinals right-hander gave the Cubs no runs in eight innings of work, allowing just two hits.

It was reliever Ryan Helsey who came to finish the job in the ninth inning to confirm the Cards’ victory and get his thirteenth save of the season.

Pujols was able to seize the opportunity presented to him when team manager Oliver Marmol decided to send the veteran into the fray as the hitter of choice in the eighth, replacing Lars Nootbaar.

Saint Louis’ 2-0 win marked the team’s 17th victory in their last 21 meetings. The Cards sit first in the Central Division in the American.
