Joey Wenddle hit three doubles and a single in addition to producing five points, helping the Tampa Bay Rays defeat the New York Mets 12-5 on Saturday night.
Yandy Diaz had two of the Rays’ eight doubles in the game, while Randy Arozarena had three hits.
Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Jose Pereza responded with homers for the Mets, who lost two straight games at Tropicana Field after a seven-game winning streak.
Rays starter Shane McClanahan (1-0) recorded his first Major Baseball victory. The 24-year-old southpaw, who made his MLB playoff debut last year, has allowed four runs on six hits in five one-third innings of work. He had seven strikeouts.
Tampa had 15 hits in that game. Heading into that game, the Florida team was only posting a .219 collective batting average.
The Sox make short work of Bundy
Dylan Bundy was manhandled at the Los Angeles Angels mound by the Boston Red Sox who easily won 9-0.
Bundy allowed a total of seven runs and eight hits in just four innings of work. Xander Bogaerts was particularly illustrated for the Sox with a three-run homerun in the fourth inning.
Martin Perez was much more dominant on the Sox side as he limited the Angels to three hits in six innings.
Mike Trout was shut out at bat after only hitting two walks.
The Tigers respond to the Cubs
The Detroit Tigers had the final say in an offensive duel as they beat the Chicago Cubs 9-8 in 10 innings.
Matt Duffy had offered the Cubs the lead early in the 10th inning with a productive single. Nomar Mazara replied for Detroit in turn at batting.
Moments later, Harold Castro pushed his teammate Jacoby Jones to home plate with a single for the winning point.
Duffy had previously hit his first homer of the campaign.
