MLB September 23 National League recap: Compelling, big Phillies win

Rhys Hoskins had three hits and four RBIs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 9-1 on Friday.

The Phillies, who have little margin for error to maintain their playoff spot in the draft standings, sign a third straight win after suffering a five-game losing streak.

The Phillies took a 9-0 lead with four-run surges in the second and fourth innings and adding a run in the fifth. Hoskins hit a double good for two runs in the second and slammed a two-run homer in the fourth.

Aaron Nola (10-12) shut out the Braves for six innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight batters.

Alec Bohm hit three hits, including a triple, and crossed home twice and drove in a run.

Braves starter Jake Odorizzi (5-6) was battered for eight runs on 10 hits in four innings.

The Braves, who are battling the New York Mets for the East Division title, have lost their last three games.

Cubs 6 – Pirates 5

HCC : Patrick Wisdom hit his 24th home run and the Cubs won a 4th game in a row.

PIT : The Pirates take an 8th consecutive loss.

Nationals 2 – Marlins 5

WAS : Lane Thomas slammed his 17th homer of the season, a high among current Nationals players.

MIA : Charles Leblanc hit two hits and drove in a run.

Brewers 5 – Reds 3

MIL : The Brewers win a third game in a row and remain 2.5 games away from a playoff spot.

NIC : Kyle Farmer opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first inning.
