MLB: Santiago Espinal (Blue Jays) on the injured list before the series against the Rays

The Toronto Blue Jays placed infielder Santiago Spinal on the 10-day injured list with an abdominal sprain on Thursday.

Montrealer Otto Lopez has been recalled and will be active for tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Espinal left Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies in the seventh inning after feeling unwell. The 27-year-old is batting .267 with seven home runs, 51 home runs and 51 runs scored this season.

Cavan Biggio, who replaced Espinal on Wednesday, will start the game at second base and strike ninth on Thursday.

Lopez, 23, has played 96 games at the AAA level with Buffalo this season. He averages .283/.365/.394, three homers, 36 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
