Chicago White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks returned to action Monday night against the Los Angeles Angels after being diagnosed with cancer five months ago.

Hendriks received a standing ovation as he entered the field in the eighth inning at the Chicago Guaranteed Rate Field. However, it was surely not the expected return for the reliever who allowed two runs and three hits in one working inning.

The White Sox finally lost 6-4.

Hendriks learned on December 8 that he had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The reliever completed his chemotherapy treatments last April.
