MLB: Jays swept aside Braves as George Springer had to quit

DUNEDIN, Fla. –Marcus Semien hit a home run and produced four runs, helping the Toronto Blue Jays defeat the Atlanta Braves 7-2 on Sunday to sweep the honors in the three-game series.

This victory was clouded, however, by the departure of George Springer, who was replaced as alternate hitter by Joe Panik, in the sixth inning.

“His legs were tired. That’s what he told me, said Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo. It was hot today. «

Springer was the designated hitter for the Blue Jays for a fourth straight game since making his debut with the team on Wednesday. The 2017 World Series MVP signed a six-year, US $ 150 million contract with the Torontonians during the offseason.

“He hasn’t made an effort for a long time so we have to be careful,” said Montoyo.

Semien slammed two runs in the eighth inning and the Blue Jays posted a seventh victory in their last nine games.

Braves starter Ian Anderson (2-1) was only automatically for four innings, allowing four runs and six hits.

“It was tough from the start,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker. He didn’t have a good feeling for his shots. Days like this happen. «

Anderson was coming back from two wins over the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs, in which he allowed five hits in 13 innings and two-thirds on the mound. The right-hander had limited the Cubs to one hit in seven innings on April 27.

Danny Jansen, who hadn’t placed a safe ball in his last 35 appearances at home, hit a single run in the second inning. Semien hit a two-run double in the third to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.

Jansen also had a single in the fourth inning and crossed the plate when Bo Bichette had a double.

“It’s a very good feeling. It’s a sigh of relief, ”Jansen said.

Braves outfielder Ronald AcuIna Jr. closed the lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning thanks to a sacrifice at the expense of Ross Stripling when the cushions were all occupied.

Ryan Borucki (3-1) replaced Stripling and he extinguished the threat by striking out Freddie Freeman and Marcell Ozuna.

“What a job from Borucki. It was amazing, ”said Stripling.

Stripling, returning from a right forearm injury, conceded two runs and five hits in four and one-third innings of work.

Rafael Dolis stepped in for the Blue Jays as the goals were filled after two strikeouts in the ninth inning. He passed AcuIna in the mitt to record a third save this season.

During the meeting, the Braves put the names of their receivers Travis d’Arnaud and Alex Jackson on the injured list.

D’Arnaud was placed on the injured list for a period of 60 days due to a sprained left thumb. He was injured on a game at home in the sixth round of Saturday night’s duel.

Jackson, who replaced D’Arnaud on Saturday, saw his name put on the injured list for a 10-day period due to a strained left hamstring.

Receiver William Contreras has been recalled from the Braves’ alternative training site and started Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays.

D’Arnaud has maintained a .220 batting average with two homers and 11 RBIs in 23 games this season.

Jackson had a hit in 23 at-bat in 10 games this year.
