ATLANTA — Austin Riley hit a one-run double, Travis d’Arnaud homered and the Atlanta Braves beat the Houston Astros 2-0 on Friday to take a 2-1 series lead. world.
Riley hit his double along the third base line in the third, scoring Eddie Rosario.
Five innings later, Arnaud’s catcher sent the ball past center field, hitting a second homer in two games. The ‘Tomahawk Chop’ ruled again, among Braves fans.
Game number four is Saturday night at Truist Park.
The Astros’ first hit didn’t come until the eighth, a lucky single from pinch-hitter Aledmys Diaz, the first hitter of the inning.
Ian Anderson struck out four batters in five innings, with three walks and one batter reached. He made 76 shots before being withdrawn from the game.
“Anderson asked me a few times if I was sure of my decision to withdraw it. I told him that I was trusting my judgement. The easy decision would have been to leave him on the mound in the sixth, but our relievers were ready and rested,” manager Brian Snitker said after the game when asked why not leave Anderson in the game.
Was it too early to retire Anderson when he still hadn’t allowed a hit? The main interested party was not at all offended.
« It was just fine, » Anderson said. I have the greatest confidence in Snit and our successors. »
» [Anderson] threw a whole game tonight, and we really didn’t do anything offensively,” Astros third baseman Alex Bregman summed up.
After the game, Bregman urged his teammates to put that bad night out of their heads as soon as possible. “We erase and we move on to the next one. You have to have a short memory in this sport,” he said.
Manager Dusty Baker simply believes Anderson has the advantage that Astros hitters don’t know Anderson.
« Like I told you a few days ago, when you’ve never faced a guy, the advantage is with the pitcher for a while. He was effectively messy, ”he then added about the Braves starter.
AJ Minter settled the sixth, but he also hit a batter.
Luke Jackson and Tyler Matzek pitched for an inning each, then Will Smith picked up the save.
Smith conceded a first single to the first batter to face him, Alex Bregman. Balloons, however, settled the ca of Yordan Alvarez, Carlos Correa and Kyle Tucker.

Alvarez patrolled left field: he was the American championship series’ most valuable player against Boston.
He was the go-to hitter in the first two World Series games, getting one hit in five at bats.
“Of course we count on this kind of player, but no one can hit all the time. You get used to seeing them hit every day, but again I appeal to the law of averages, observed Baker. The longer these players go up to bat, the closer they get to a new productive streak. That’s how hitters think,” the manager said in an optimistic tone.
The only game without a run or hit in the World Series came in 1956: Yankees’ Don Larsen’s perfect game against Brooklyn.
Atlanta put two runners on base in second but Anderson was the last out of the inning, struck out.
The Braves most recently made the World Series in 1999, when they were swept away by the New York Yankees.
As an Atlanta-based team, the Braves won the Fall Classic in 1995, beating the Cleveland Indians.
The 2017 edition of the World Series concluded with a first triumph for the Astros.
Prior to the game, the Braves honored the late Hall of Famer Hank Aaron in a ceremony that included his wife Billye.
After the American anthem, the Braves released a video tribute to Aaron, showing highlights from his career.
Aaron died on January 22, at the age of 86.
Elsewhere, Braves pitcher Charlie Morton underwent surgery on his right fibula, following the injury sustained during the Fall Classic curtain raiser.
Dr. Robert Anderson performed the operation Thursday in Green Bay, in connection with an arrow hit by Yuli Gurriel.
Atlanta expects Morton to recover in time for the upcoming training camp.
The right-hander should be in the club’s entourage this weekend.
