MLB – Baseball: Defeated by the Cubs, the Blue Jays open the door to competition

TORONTO – Franmil Reyes homered, Nico Hoerner drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 on Wednesday to avoid being swept in the three-game series.

Ian Happ and Zach McKinstry hit two hits apiece for the Cubs, which ended a four-game losing streak.

The Cubs finished August with a 15-15 record, posting their best month of 2022.

« It’s positive, » manager David Ross said. We want to continue in the same line in September. »

Released by Cleveland, Reyes is on four homers and 24 hits in 22 games with the Cubs.

« It feels good, » Reyes said. Not everyone gets a second chance. I have to take advantage of it. »

For the Jays, Alejandro Kirk hit a three-run homer and Cavan Biggio hit a two-run long ball.

The Jays finished August with a 13-14 record, their first losing record in any month this year.

Mitch White (1-5) gave up six runs and eight hits in four and two-thirds innings.

Luke Farrell allowed two runs and two hits in two innings.

He is the son of John Farrell, who was the manager of the Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox.

His older brother Shane is in charge of amateur recruiting for the Toronto club.

Manuel Rodriguez (1-0) replaced Farrell and allowed no hits in two innings.

Rowan Wick, his seventh gunner, went for a ninth save.

Toronto kicks off a 10-game road trip on Friday that includes stints in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Arlington.

The Blue Jays and Orioles are in the fight for one of the additional playoff spots.

« Our guys are energized that all of our remaining games are going to be important, » Blue Jays manager John Schneider said.

Prior to the game, the Blue Jays secured the services of receiver Edward Duran from the Miami Marlins. The latter thus completes the transaction which sent Zach Pop and Anthony Bass to the Torontonians on August 2.

The 18-year-old Duran batted .224 with 11 RBIs in the Dominican summer league last season.
