Mikaël Grenier back in GT World Challenge Europe!

Monday April 12, 2021 by Eliane Gilain

Mikaël Grenier, driver from Stoneham, will be back this season in the GT World Challenge Europe series. However, his year had started badly when the Swiss team Emil Frey announced to Grenier last December that it would not renew with him for the 2021 season. It seemed too late for the Quebecer to find himself a full-time driver. .

Since then, however, Grenier has received several good news: not only, he should complete the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Endurance Championship within the Sun Energy 1 Racing team (GTD class) after having competed for them in the last 24 Hours. de daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring, but he will also participate in the GT World Challenge Europe championship with the Winward Racing team which is also entering a Mercedes AMG GT3 (pictured above, seen in testing two weeks ago at Castellet).

“I am very happy with this news” confides Mikaël, who is currently in Germany visiting the team workshops to have his racing seat molded. “The first test is in Monza in a few days. It’s a track that I know well, so even though I have no experience with the team, I don’t come into the unknown, ”he adds. Mikaël Grenier is also used to the Mercedes AMG GT3, which he will drive this time with Philip Ellis and Russell Ward. These two drivers have won the 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD class, ahead of Grenier, Kenny Habul, Luca Stolz and Raffaele Marciello!

“The agreement with Winward Racing came to fruition after Daytona, where they saw me racing. So we were in contact when I was in Florida, and they called me after Sebring to give me this steering wheel. I will do the Endurance Championship in Europe with them in the Silver class, which represents 5 races. After Monza, our next events will be in May with the 1000 km of Le Castellet then at the end of July at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps ”indicates Mikaël.

In addition to entering a Mercedes AMG GT3 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and a GT4 version in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, the South African team will participate this season in the DTM series as well as in the ADAC GT Masters, the championship of Germany GT3. For Mikaël however, only the program in GT World Challenge Europe is currently acquired: “it is certain that the DTM is attractive, but we have to see how this series will evolve with GT cars from now on. So far there are just 17 cars ”.

Being entered by a team with such multiple commitments as Winward Racing obviously represents a great chance for Grenier, who recalls: « I am very happy to have been recruited by them, because they are involved in several championships ».

The 2021 GT World Challenge Europe season kicks off this weekend in Monza. the 3 hour race will take place this Sunday, April 18.
