midfielder Pape Gueye suspended by FIFA

Olympique de Marseille midfielder Pape Gueye suspended by FIFA this Friday, January 14. Currently at the CAN with the Senegalese selection, Pape Gueye, 22, did not appear on the score sheet against Guinea (0-0) this Friday.

It was his coach, Aliou Cissé, who said after the match: «  Pape Gueye had an extra national team problem just before the match kicked off. Five minutes before, we were notified that FIFA suspended him due to a transfer deal between his club Marseille and Watford. That’s why we removed it from the match sheet. You have to pray to get it back for the whole tournament. It’s not yet obvious. »

A two-year-old dispute

At issue, a dispute between OM and the Watford club for two years : Pape Gueye had signed a pre-contract with the English club at the start of 2020, 6 months from the end of his contract with the Le Havre club, before breaking it unilaterally to finally engage freely with OM in July 2020.

Born in France, he played with the U18s and U19s of France before opting for Senegal, his parents’ country of origin, in October 2021. He signed his first professional contract in Le Havre in 2017. Since arriving in Marseille he has played 47 league games with the club, scoring two goals.
