Mexican football worries about the 2026 World Cup

Clashes between supporters of two first division football teams resulted in more than twenty injuries on Saturday March 5. The images went around the world. Should Fifa reconsider its decision to award Mexico the co-organization of the 2026 World Cup? asks the country’s press.
On Sunday March 6, the Mexican Football League banned all travel outside of fans until further notice.
A decision which follows the violent incidents which took place, Saturday evening, during the match between two big teams of the first division and which made at least 26 injured. Images that have already gone around the world.
The Querétaro team, in the center of Mexico, received in its Corregidora stadium that of the Atlas, a club from Guadalajara.

Overwhelmed security
At the 63and minute of the match, clashes in the stands between groups of supporters of the two teams degenerated. This forced the spectators to flee on the lawn, in front of overwhelmed security guards.
The daily Universal evoked a match “of terror lived in the stadium of Corregidora”now closed until further notice.

“Detestable incident”
These serious incidents went up to Fifa, the International Football Federation, which published a press release, including by the daily Milenio :
The Fifa supports the Mexican Football Federation […] to condemn this heinous incident and call on local authorities to bring swift justice against the individuals responsible.”

“Neither forgiveness nor forgetting”titled Sunday January 6 sports daily Record which pointed out:
Mexican football suffered the bloodiest day of this century.”
Mexico is a co-host, along with the United States and Canada, of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Universal comments:
The images of what happened in Querétaro have gone around the world, and media pressure could be an important factor for Fifa to take a drastic decision.
In other words, removing Mexico from its role as co-organizer.
