But the Silver Arrows bounced back and this time in a good way, slowly gaining momentum with six consecutive podium finishes before the summer break. Mercedes goes on vacation with double podiums in France and Hungary and a first pole position for George Russell on the Hungaroring.

Those results – along with Ferrari’s strategic, reliability and driver errors – leave the two teams tied with 11 podiums during the season.

But team principal Toto Wolff insisted: « I would prefer to have more wins and fewer podiums. »

“We are humble, but we strive for race wins rather than second and third places. If they are on merit then that is a good step forward.”

Wolff unsure of Ferrari failures

Ferrari failed once again at the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break. A tactical error – switching to unoptimized hard tires – dropped Charles Leclerc to sixth place as he was on course to win the race.

Asked about the growing number of mistakes made by Ferraris from the pit wall, which often benefited Mercedes, Wolff added: « I can’t comment because hitting a person is never okay. »

« I don’t know what the reasons were, why they decided to drop the medium or not use the soft at the start of the race, but it cost them the win. Ferrari was quick, but couldn’t make it happen. »
