Every season, the transfer window electrifies football fans. The big clubs compete with millions to afford the services of the biggest football stars. Neymar, Mbappé, Ronaldo… Here are the ten most expensive transfers in history.

Neymar (from FC Barcelona to PSG in 2017)

At the end of a long soap opera, Neymar signed up for five years with PSG in August 2017. The Brazilian star terminated his contract with FC Barcelona by paying the amount of his release clause, set at 222 million euros . The striker thus became the most expensive player in history.

Kylian Mbappé (from Monaco to PSG in 2018)

After Neymar, PSG struck another big blow on the transfer market in the summer of 2017, by offering Kylian Mbappé for 145 million euros (excluding any bonuses, set at 35 million euros). The 18-year-old phenomenon has thus become the second most expensive player in history (and the most expensive Frenchman), after being loaned with a compulsory purchase option to the capital club by Monaco. He was officially acquired by PSG in the summer of 2018.

OUSMANE DEMBÉLÉ (FROM BORUSSIA DORTMUND TO FC BARCELONA in 2017)

Recruited to replace Neymar, who left for PSG, Ousmane Dembélé joined FC Barcelona in the summer of 2017 from Borussia Dortmund, for 105 million euros excluding bonuses (42 million euros maximum). An amount which has since reached, with bonuses, 145 million euros.

Philippe Coutinho (from Liverpool to FC Barcelona in 2018)

The Brazilian Philippe Coutinho was recruited in January 2018 by FC Barcelona to also compensate for the departure of his compatriot Neymar, a few months earlier, at PSG. The Blaugrana club paid 120 million euros (excluding bonuses, which can reach 40 million euros) to snatch him from Liverpool. With the bonuses, the total cost of his transfer now stands at 135 million euros.

Joao Félix (from Benfica to Atlético Madrid in 2019)

In the summer of 2019, Portuguese prodigy Joao Félix (19) left Benfica Lisbon to sign with Atlético Madrid, for 126 million euros. His mission is to make people forget Antoine Griezmann, who left for Barcelona during the same transfer window.

DECLAN RICE (FROM WEST HAM TO ARSENAL IN 2023)

This summer, Declan Rice stayed in London and joined Arsenal. The English club extended 122 million euros (including bonus) to snatch the English international, trained with the Hammers.

Enzo Fernandez (From Benfica to Chelsea in 2023)

A few weeks after the World Cup won by Argentina, Enzo Fernandez, who was voted the best young player in the competition, left Benfica to join Chelsea. The English club has paid the sum of 121 million euros to secure the services of the midfielder, who has become the most expensive player in the history of the Blues.

In July 2019, Antoine Griezmann decided to leave Atlético Madrid, where he spent five seasons, to join FC Barcelona. To afford the French striker, the Blaugranas paid the amount of his release clause, set at 120 million euros. But the 2018 world champion failed to win in Catalonia and returned to Atlético Madrid.

Jack Grealish (from Aston Villa to Manchester City in 2021)

Despite the Covid-19 crisis, which weighed on club finances, Manchester City offered English international midfielder Jack Grealish in early August 2021. His transfer, from Aston Villa, is the most important of the history between two Premier League clubs: 100 million pounds, or approximately 117 million euros.

Cristiano Ronaldo caused a thunderclap on the football planet in the summer of 2018, announcing his departure from Real Madrid, where the Portuguese played for nine seasons, to engage with Juventus Turin. The amount of the transfer amounted to 100 million euros excluding bonuses, 117 million euros by integrating the various bonuses appearing in the contract.
