McKenna Match of the Day: April 14 – Marc-André Fleury vs. Scott Wedgewood

Former NHL goalie Mike McKenna offers his daily starting goalie game of the day for Thursday. April 14, 2022:

Why I love this game:

Dallas goaltender Scott Wedgewood will start his second straight game after shutting out the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. He won the net – but what about Jake Oettinger, who carried the Stars all season? The drama unfolds in Dallas, but it’s about winning. The team led by Rick Bowness must make the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Starting Wedgewood is a bold move considering the season Oettinger has had. But the journeyman goaltender was fantastic against the Lightning just two nights ago. Clearly, Stars coach Bowness thinks Wedgewood is giving his team the best chance of winning tonight against a determined Minnesota Wild.

Wedgewood is an active goaltender who likes to play at the top of his territory. He made the difference for the Arizona Coyotes in 26 games this season before coming to Dallas at the NHL trade deadline. Since joining, the 29-year-old from Brampton, Ont., has posted a 3-0-1 record and .922 save percentage.

Things have been going well for Marc-Andre Fleury since arriving in Minnesota at the NHL trade deadline. He’s won four of five games and has a .926 save percentage in his time with the Wild.

What fantasy owners should do:

Wedgewood has been a quality pickup for fantasy owners, but the Wild has been so strong lately that I’d be cautious starting it. And that’s a big reason why Marc-André Fleury is a safe bet: Minnesota should win this game. But Fleury’s shot total may not be high. Anyway, I would start it.

Conclusion for Marc-André Fleury:

Dallas is desperate for points and will be looking to start the game with energy. A good first period of Fleury is essential.

Conclusion for Scott Wedgewood:

Ignore any outside pressure and just play. Wedgewood is at his best when playing freely.
