In an interview with Estrella Galicia 0.0, the Catalan shares the ease he has recently regained and his future aspirations.
Slowly but surely, Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda Team) is regaining his bearings within this field. After a long-awaited first contact at the Misano Test and a premature GP of Aragon due to two collisions, the native of Cervera indeed won an encouraging fourth place in Japan; result which was followed by a new Top 5 at Buriram… Moreover, the n°93 could have done better if Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing) had not come between Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team ) and him at the end.
In view of the progress, all hopes are therefore allowed for 2023, as he confided in an interview with Estrella Galicia 0.0 “The most important thing is that the improvement was constant, because it sometimes happens, in the rehabilitation phase, to take leaps back,” commented the eight-time World Champion.
Achieving 100%: his immediate objective
“We managed quite well, especially during the final race in Thailand. In the dry as in the wet, we were in the game. I could even play with the bike, which hadn’t happened to me for a long time,” added the Honda rider, who dreams of only one thing: to become the best version of himself again. “There is still a bit of a way to go before I reach 100% of my physical capacity again. We will have to see where my arm is this winter, when it will be less stressed. And from there, we will try to improve as much as possible. But I think we can be competitive again. The only thing is that it involves a combination of things, like in any sport for that matter,” he remarked.
Although there is no doubt that he is still just as fast, he still has to gain in resistance to hope to end the year on the one hand with good feelings and to concentrate fully on the 2023 project, when it comes to test the new prototype in Valencia. Because the idea of reconquest is clearly present. “When you evolve within the Repsol Honda team and you have such a record, you are obliged to fight for the title, he affirmed. At the start of each season, this is what you aspire to. Afterwards you re-evaluate your level according to the competitors. It is then that you will have a clearer idea of whether or not it is possible to achieve the goal you set for yourself. »
But beyond having faced many changes in its life, the face of MotoGP™ has also evolved with a clear domination of European manufacturers. “Honda has been working tirelessly since Japan regained some semblance of normality. Let’s hope they take a big step forward for 2023. But I can’t blame them because I see them giving their all, he said. It is not the will that is lacking. Then, of course, you have to go step by step. »
Who will rule this year?
In the meantime, failing to be able to fight for the crown this year, Marc Márquez made some predictions, without language of wood. “The field is very homogeneous at the moment, it shows in the results, the classifications, through the different winners… But, as always, there are two or three drivers who make the difference: Fabio Quartararo, Francesco Bagnaia and Aleix Espargaró, he indicated. These three are a little above the rest and they are above all more regular. Who will win ? We do not know yet. I think Aleix « the surprise of the season » has nothing to lose, so it works in his favor. Fabio is the Champion and Pecco is the one who, from my point of view, has the best bike. Everyone has their strengths. It is up to them to make the most of it. »
