Manchester United drop to Premier League entry against Brighton

The game: 1-2

Exactly three months after crushing Manchester United (4-0), Brighton had fun winning for the first time in their history at Old Trafford (2-1). Without Cucurella or Bissouma, the two stars of the team who left for Chelsea and Tottenham, the visitors had a superb match under the sun. In midfield, the nugget Caicedo (20) ridiculed the Fred-McTominay duo. The attacking trio hurt the weak central defense Maguire-Lisandro Martinez very badly. Trossard found the backstop after just 30 seconds of play. Lost in his system with Eriksen on false 9, MU saw Brighton score twice in the space of nine minutes (see elsewhere).

On the hour mark, boosted by the entry of Cristiano Ronaldo, the locals, deprived of Martial, finally weighed offensively. Rashford missed everything (60th, 65th), Sanchez showed up (67th, 73rd) but his deflection on receiving a corner was blocked in his goal by MacAllister (68th). Without gravity: the men of the excellent Graham Potter won, logically.

The man: Gross had fun again against United

Scorer of two Premier League goals last season, midfielder Pascal Gross scored an improbable brace in the space of nine minutes on Manchester United’s pitch. The German first took over a center from the former Mancunian Welbeck, at the far post (30th). He then saw De Gea repel a shot from March (39th) at his feet, completing a superb offensive transition. In his career, Gross has scored six times against Manchester United, his favorite opponent. This Sunday, he also did a lot of work in the midfield, next to MacAllister and in support of a hardworking Welbeck.

The fact: CR7 enters and shakes his team

Author of only 45 minutes of play this summer, against Rayo Vallecano, Cristiano Ronaldo did not start against Brighton. The Portuguese, who has inclinations to leave, had a black eye on the bench. But he proved his worth after coming into play, from the 53rd. Rather aligned to the right of the attack, it allowed the Red Devils to better hold the ball and be more dangerous. His perfect cross from the 60th was (badly) taken over by the disappointing Rashford. Active, often claiming the ball, he also obtained a corner in the 86th, on a blocked shot. Looking for her best physically, after a preparation started late, the 37-year-old star still has a lot to give.
