Manchester United and Liverpool in Bangkok for a friendly match


Manchester United footballers will travel to Thailand in July to take on Liverpool as part of a pre-season tour which will also take them to Australia, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.

Thai football fans have been in turmoil since the confirmation of the arrival next July of the two most popular teams in the kingdom, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Manchester United players will meet Liverpool players in Bangkok on July 12 at Rajamangala Stadium as part of a pre-season tour which will also take them to Australia, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.

Although it was only a friendly match, the Thai media and football fans dubbed the game the « Red War ». But this event is also likely to spark a fierce fight for seats, with tickets ranging from 5,000 to 25,000 baht.

Both English Premier League teams are incredibly popular in Thailand, with several million fans each in the kingdom proudly sporting the scarves, pennants and t-shirts.

Many Thais are more familiar with the names of English players than those from their own country.

After their match on July 12, the players of ManU will fly to Australia to face the team Melbourne Victory on July 15 and four days later that of Crystal Palace, whose coach is the former French world champion. Patrick Vieira – both matches will take place at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground.
