Manchester City crush Leeds to regain Premier League lead
Pressure has no hold on Manchester City. A few hours after being overtaken by Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, the club coached by Pep Guardiola largely won in Leeds (4-0). He has a point lead over the Reds, whose goal difference is just superior (64 against 63).
Phil Foden, one of the Citizens in form, was involved in his team’s first three goals when he had not sent an assist in the Championship for almost five months. His free kick from the 13th was deflected with a header by Rodri. His corner from the 54th found Dias whose delivery was transformed by Aké (54th). In the 78th, the 21-year-old Englishman offset Gabriel Jesus for the third Skyblues achievement. The Brazilian striker is also on cloud nine: he has scored six times in the space of seven days!
A few days before his half return from C1 on the field of Real Madrid, City had an almost perfect evening. Only Aké’s injury is worth noting. De Bruyne, Mahrez, Stones or even Bernardo Silva have been spared. This did not lower the solidity or the intensity of a team which has just chained five trips without conceding a goal in the Premier League, a first in its history. Shaken by Dallas, who was injured instantly, in the first period, Laporte still saved two huge situations (72nd, 89th). Ederson showed off against Gelhardt (90th). Grealish (52nd), Gundogan (62nd), Cancelo (87th) were clumsy unlike veteran Fernandinho, who scored in added time (90th + 4).
Defeated 0-7 in the first leg, Leeds showed courage and was sometimes threatening on counterattacks led by Raphinha or Rodrigo. But the difference between the two teams was too great, especially on set pieces. Jesse Marsch’s men are 17th, and therefore threatened with relegation.
