Luka Doncic details the secrets of the Luka 1

“It was an incredible feeling. It was the playoffs, an important game, I had just come back from injury. I was so excited to show off my shoes. It was incredible”.

It was April 24. Luka Doncic took the opportunity of his return from injury to play his first playoff game with his new pair of signature shoes on his feet, the Jordan Luka 1.

The Slovenian leader is not ready to forget this day, as the fact of finally having his shoe with his name represents an important achievement for him.

« I just dreamed of playing in the NBA, and now I’m here with my signature shoe. It’s an incredible adventure. I could only dream of being like this when I was a kid. It’s incredible. I am only 23 years old. I hope there will be a long way to go”.

Long-time « sneakerhead »

A fan of « sneakers » from an early age, Luka Doncic did not force himself to join Michael Jordan’s team when it reached out to him. In his younger years, he almost always wore Nikes. Later KDs, Kobes, and therefore also a lot of Jordan Brand models.

“I wouldn’t say I’ve worn it all my life, but everyone in my country was all MJ! »he added before discussing his first meeting with “His Airness”. “It was crazy the first time I met him. I was really nervous. I did not know what to say. His legacy is fantastic… Not many people can say they have their own shoes, especially with a brand like Jordan. That’s wonderful « .

It was at the end of the 2020 season in the Orlando « bubble » that the first discussions began between the « Jumpman » brand and the player regarding the development of the famous « Luka 1 ». The exchanges were numerous, productive, first by videoconference then physically, to manage to concoct a model worthy of the event.

Two novelties for “Luka Magic”

The Luka 1 is thus equipped with two innovations: a “Formula 23” foam, and a technology called “IsoPlate” under the forefoot.

These two specificities, which are supposed to facilitate Luka Doncic in his work of creating space, were presented by Chad Troyer, « Senior Product Line Manager », starting with the « Formula 23 » foam in the midsole.

“It’s a very soft and responsive foam. When you think of the Nike React for Jordan, it’s a little softer. It’s also a bit more durable. We therefore strive to make Luka’s product as sustainable as possible. Basically what the Formula 23 does is give it a really smooth and even ride. It allows him to stay balanced, to be cushioned and to feel the ground”.

Derived from the « Flight Plate » of the Air Jordan 28, and the « Eclipse Plate » of the Air Jordan 34, the « IsoPlate » technology plays more on the lateral support at the front of the foot, also used by the superstar of the Mavericks.

“The IsoPlate, by design and construction in the forefoot, protects it on the lateral side. When he backs up, it helps him stay on the sole. But when he engages his forefoot, it also helps him propel himself. It’s a bit of a system unique to Luka which is almost like an additional weapon under his foot for the way he plays. The IsoPlate and Formula 23 are a little underfoot system that really helps players do those moves better.”

king of teasing

The process of creating the Luka 1 was the result of a real exchange, also on the composition of the upper, embellished with Flightwire cables to combine support and lightness, or on the colors chosen.

“I had a lot to say about the colors and the look of the shoe. Jordan gave me the opportunity to get involved. It was 50-50, and we chose the colors together”underlined Luka Doncic.

The latter has thus ensured the presence of a color in homage to Slovenia and Ljubjana in particular, which will be called the “Natural Habitat”.

“This colorway from my home country, Slovenia, represents its colors. It means a lot to me because Ljubjana is my hometown. It’s a special shoe. Green with the logo. The insole is green. She represents everything green in Slovenia”he added.
