Mirco Müller returns to Switzerland after almost ten years abroad. The 26-year-old defender has signed a six-season contract with HC Lugano. He had been playing in Leksand in Sweden since February.
Currently, Müller is in preparation camp with the Swiss squad ahead of the Riga World Championship, which begins on Saturday for Patrick Fischer’s players against the Czech Republic. Until then, the Zurich resident had only participated in one World Cup in 2018, where Switzerland had celebrated a silver medal.
Müller comes from the Winterthur junior movement and has only played one season in the National League in Switzerland. During the 2011-2012 season, he played seven games for the Kloten Flyers at the age of 17. He then immigrated to North America. First in the Western Hockey League, then in AHL and from 2014 with matches in NHL for the San José Sharks and the New Jersey Devils. The Zurich player has 188 matches in the best league in the world.
In Lugano, Müller must strengthen the defense of a team led by new coach Chris McSorley. The Ticinese had already signed two defenders with Santeri Alatalo (Zug) and Samuel Guerra (Davos).
