Liverpool start with a draw against a seductive Fulham

Party weekend in England! A week after the Community Shield, won by Liverpool against Manchester City (3-1), the Premier League was back with obviously the 1st day. The day after Arsenal’s victory on the lawn of Crystal Palace (2-0), the Reds therefore made their return to the Championship with a meeting against the promoted Fulham, already back a year after his descent, at Craven Cottage. Suddenly, the last confrontations between the two teams dated back to the 2020/21 season and the Reds had not managed to beat the Cottagers (1-1 in the first leg, 0-1 in the return)! A taste of revenge was in the air and Jürgen Klopp lined up a 4-3-3 with a Salah-Firmino-Diaz trio in front, leaving Nunez on the bench. Marco Silva started on a 4-2-3-1 and counted on Mitrovic at the forefront to surprise the Mersey club.

In front of a crazy crowd, the locals surprised everyone by doing more than annoy the Reds at the start of the game. Fulham’s streaks were interesting and the Reds suffered without conceding a goal. The first real opportunity came a little late with this attempt from Salah’s off target header (22nd). The Cottagers answered behind since Palhinha, in the confusion, offered a big scare to the visitors (25th). Marco Silva’s players pushed harder and after an opportunity from Reed (32nd), the opener finally arrived. On a sublime cross from Tete, Mitrovic dominated Alexander-Arnold in the air to score with a header (32nd, 1-0). A big blow for Jürgen Klopp and his men, especially as Luis Diaz touched the amount just behind (39th).

Decisive entry of Nunez

After a complicated first period, Liverpool therefore found themselves led to the break for their return to the Premier League. When they returned from the locker room, the Reds were already showing a little more. Nunez and Elliott notably came into play around the 51st minute and that changed a lot of things. If Kebano found the post with a big shot from the right (57th), the Reds were much more dangerous (53rd, 61st, 62nd) and were logically rewarded. On the right side, Alexander-Arnold centered on the ground towards Nunez who equalized with a Madjer (64th, 1-1). Enough to revive Liverpool who were not far from passing in front with another hot situation for the Uruguayan (67th). But shortly after, Van Dijk touched Mitrovic in the area and thus offered a penalty to Fulham.

Author of the opener, the Serbian striker did himself justice and transformed on his right, where Alisson had also dived (72, 2-1). Everything had to be redone for visitors who did not give up. After a big recovery from Carvalho above (80th), Salah scored in turn on a serve from Nunez, after a long opening from Alexander-Arnold (80th, 2-2). Under a blazing sun, the two teams found themselves once again tied and pushed to get this precious victory but no one took the upper hand despite a last huge opportunity for Liverpool with this crossbar found by Henderson (90th + 4) . At the edge of the Thames, Fulham and Liverpool therefore left each other back to back (2-2) and no one joined Arsenal at the top of the standings.
