The ex-boss of motorsport at BMW, the German Mike Krack, will lead the Aston Martin Formula 1 team replacing American Otmar Szafnauer, who quit in early January, the team said in a statement on Friday.

“After having occupied very important positions in the field of motorsport at BMWs and Porsches, and worked as an engineer in Formula 1 at Sauber, Mike has a mix of experience and expertise that makes him the ideal choice for us,” comments Aston Martin Managing Director Martin Whitmarsh of his new Main team.

Krack, for his part, recalls having worked with one of the two pilots of the team, the German Sebastian Vettel, “in 2006 and 2007, when I was an engineer at BMW-Sauber and he was the driver of ‘stable trials’. Szafnauer is tipped to take the reins of the French Alpine team, which separated Thursday from its executive director Marcin Budkowski.
